Looking At Early Next WeekAdded : Saturday at 14:55 Lots of uncertainty in the model output today about developments beyond the middle of next week with models tending to back away from a potential easterly flow and instead plumping for a ridge of high pressure to affect Britain and Ireland. We'll put that to one side for now though and focus on events beforehand...namely Monday and Tuesday.
Low pressure will be passing close to the northeast of the country early next week with a cold front sweeping south-eastwards during Monday into Tuesday:
In its wake will come some pretty cold air down from the northwest, this having originated over Greenland:
A band of rain associated with that cold front will move south-eastwards across the country during Monday into early Tuesday, and as some of that colder air behind digs in then there could be some back-edge sleet and snow in places:
Tuesday is then set to be a cold day for many away from the far southwest with temperatures in the north struggling to get above freezing:
What we are watching is the snow risk as we are expecting plenty of heavy and frequent wintry showers to affect northern and western regions, these showers bringing snow, perhaps even to lower levels, with accumulations over high ground:
There is also a chance of a trough feature crossing the country on Tuesday night bringing the risk of more widespread snowfall in places, but this is low confidence at the moment and something that we will keep an eye on:
As temperatures drop down to or below freezing in many places then there will be the wintry hazards of black ice to look out for:
A real flavour of winter on the way early next week then with most places seeing some frosty nights and some places seeing snow - the north and west most likely at the moment but we wouldn't rule out the chance of some surprises elsewhere.
