Kitchen Sink Of WeatherAdded : Friday at 13:50 We mentioned in a discussion a couple of moons back that April is one of those months which can throw everything including the kitchen sink at the UK.
The reason is simply down to the fact that to the South of us the air is now rather warm thanks to an increasing sun, but to the North of us the air is still very cold due to the Arctic coming out of Winter.
There are few places in the world where this contrast is more marked than in America. It's this contrast which fuels the tornado season around this time of the year, but thankfully, as an island surrounded by relatively cool seas, we tend to see this contrast tamed somewhat.
At the moment, we are doing rather well :-
An upper ridge across Western Europe bringing somewhat milder air to the UK, but the ridge is collapsing and by Monday we have this :-
Low pressure in the North Sea, cool upper air and showers dominating the scene. In fact, by the middle of next week and the upper trough starts to really dominate the weather pattern with some heavy showers around, thunderstorms and the sort of days where you can see sunshine in the morning, showers in the afternoon and hail in the early evening, the kitchen sink of weather.
Even by next weekend, the GFS ► as with other global models, shows the pattern remaining in place with some rather interesting low pressure systems running around the upper trough :-
Into May and a great example of how the GFS ► can pull in warmer air from the South :-
But, this, coupled with low pressure is a recipe for further unsettled weather in our part of the world. So, a couple of decent weeks of weather across the UK which we have enjoyed, but all change next week as the weather reminds us that it will always balance the books in the end.
