Colder Weather To Return?Added : Saturday at 13:15 With the ever-increasing hours of daylight and the strengthening sun then it's only natural that the thoughts of many people at this time of year turn towards spring and the return of warmer temperatures. However, as just about all of us are aware from experience, the spring season can have some surprises up its sleeve and we can pinpoint many occasions in the past where temperatures in the mid teens have quickly been followed by a return to frost and snow. Could the same happen in the next few weeks?
At the present time there's no doubting the dominant weather feature across Britain and Ireland when looking at the forecast chart for tonight:
Frontal systems pushing in from the southwest are bringing bands of rain and showers with them, some of these heavy at times whilst winds will become strong with gales or severe gales for parts of the southwest during Sunday:
Meanwhile temperatures aren't anything to shout about really with values generally close to or a touch below the seasonal norm:
The rather cool and changeable spell of weather continues into the first part of next week for many areas before a ridge of high pressure tries to build in later on Monday and into Tuesday to bring drier and more settled conditions with it:
You will notice that the ridge comes about as high pressure over Scandinavia and high pressure to the east of the Azores try to link up, but these two areas of high pressure are associated with very different air masses:
For our part of the world Monday night looks rather cold with a touch of frost forming:
However, another Atlantic low is winding itself up to our west and this pushes north-eastwards on Tuesday whilst high pressure to our south drifts further east allowing milder south-westerly winds to move in:
This is short-lived though as somewhat colder air returns from the west on Wednesday in the wake of a cold front moving eastwards:
Again, this is short-lived, nicely demonstrating the changeable theme to the weather over the coming days, with milder air then set to return from the southwest for the second half of the week:
Although this milder Tropical Maritime air mass is likely to bring a lot of cloud with it, any brighter spells could help lift temperatures into the low-mid teens:
However, two days later the GFS ► model is suggesting the potential for colder air to move south with a potentially deep low bringing strong winds and the risk of showers that may turn wintry in places:
No sign of any let-up to the unsettled weather then with low pressure looking like it will never be too far away, but charts such as those currently being shown for next weekend could be exciting for convective weather fans with low pressure, a cold air mass and the strengthening sun all likely to be the ingredients for some big showers.
