The Turning Of The SeasonAdded : Wednesday at 15:10 Only a couple of weeks left of meteorological summer.. yeah, yeah we know, Autumn starts on September 21st blah blah, but meteorologists are so excited about the next season that we change our calendars three weeks before those pesky astronomers. Just kidding, it's done to make met records easier to compare years against each other.
Here is the chart for Thursday :-
A pretty active system sweeping in from the Atlantic to end the working week and it's in no hurry to move off as we enter the weekend.
That said, it's an improving picture over the weekend as a transient ridge of high pressure crosses from the West, but then all change on Sunday as another area of low pressure heads in from the Atlantic.
This one is a little different as it contains remnants of Hurricane Gert. Now, before you board up the windows and spray paint "Go Home Gert" all over them and worry your neighbour Gertude who lives over the road in number 93, remember these are remnants.
To you and me it means rain. To your neighbour Gertude who lives over the road in number 93 it might involve phoning the council to complain about you.
Here is the rain chart for Sunday :-
In fact, the main portion of remnants actually heads North towards Iceland, but the triple point of the front will cross the UK bringing a period of heavier rain for many Central and Southern areas.
One thing which does happen at this time of year as the Arctic starts to cool down is that the high pressure area which developed in Spring starts to wane.
This is the Arctic at the moment :-
High pressure at around 50mb (right up at the top of the troposphere). If you jump forward a couple of weeks to the start of September it's starting to look like this :-
You can see the high breaking up as colder air develops. By the middle of September you should be seeing the polar vortex starting to develop as it does pretty much at every time around Autumn (meteorological and astronomical).
