Improvements For Many
Added : Wed 16 May : 05:44 BST

A relatively fine and settled Wednesday is in store across much of Britain and Ireland thanks to a ridge of high pressure extending across many areas. It will also feel slightly warmer with lighter winds, but further unsettled and rather cool conditions are expected to return as we go through to the end of the week.

Wednesday morning is starting off bright and chilly in many regions with a touch of frost across rural locations. Many areas will be bright though with plenty of sunshine around helping those temperatures to pick up quickly. Some cloud will bubble up during the day, and a few showers will break out but these will be light and well scattered with many areas staying dry and fine. One exception will come across Northern Ireland and western Scotland where cloud will thicken up and some outbreaks of rain will arrive later on today. Temperatures will end up around normal for many places, so feeling rather more pleasant than yesterday.

That rain will continue to push further south and east across Scotland and Ireland tonight, but many other areas will see another dry night with long clear spells and temperatures dropping back into the chilly category again. Thursday will then see further outbreaks of rain across northern and western areas but southern and eastern Britain should be drier and brighter. By the time we get to Friday low pressure will be to the south of the country with many areas seeing showers or longer spells of rain as a cool easterly wind picks up again.

 Another Changeable Week
Added : Sun 13 May : 21:07 BST

As we move into mid-May the cool and changeable conditions that have affected much of Britain and Ireland in recent weeks look set to continue for some time yet. Low pressure remains firmly in charge of our weather, and whilst conditions may not be quite as deeply unsettled as they have been, there remains no sign of anything remotely settled affecting the country for the foreseeable future.

A deep Atlantic low is bringing wet and windy conditions down from the northwest during Sunday night, with clearer, colder and more showery conditions following. Therefore Monday morning will start off cloudy and wet across central and southern parts of Wales, the Midlands and into East Anglia with this band of rain gradually moving south-eastwards during the day, clearing Kent by the evening. Many areas will then turn brighter as the bright and breezy conditions across many northern and western areas extend further south but a number of showers will break out with some of these turning heavy and thundery - especially over central and eastern regions in the afternoon whilst over northern hills they will be wintry in nature. Temperatures for many will be on the cool side again, but where any prolonged spells of sunshine develop it won't feel too bad.

A chilly night follows with showers continuing in the north and west, and then for Tuesday it will be another day of sunny spells and showers breaking out, with some of these again heavy and thundery with hail, as well as containing snow again over the Scottish mountains. From midweek onwards there is some uncertainty about exact developments, but further rain is expected to move into the northwest on Wednesday with other areas seeing a drier and brighter day then for the end of the week rain or showers are more likely in the south as northern areas turn drier.
