A complex weather situation across the UK today as an area of low pressure formed to the southwest yesterday and this low will be meandering around over or close to Wales today bringing rain or showers with it to many southern regions. However high pressure is building to the north and this high will push the low away to the south during the next couple of days but this means chilly east or north-easterly winds will affect many areas for a time.
For many parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland it is a bright and cold start to the day with a hard frost in places first thing but there will be plenty of sunshine around and this sunshine continues today helping to lift temperatures, but scattered wintry showers are likely to continue in the far north whilst southern Scotland turns cloudy with some rain and snow moving north. It is also a mostly dry start for central and eastern parts of England this morning with some sunshine around, but for many northern and western parts of England along with Wales and south-eastern parts of Northern Ireland there is a lot of cloud around with outbreaks of rain and snow, the snow mainly over higher ground, pushing slowly eastwards. This process continues today so that by this afternoon the rain will be affecting central and eastern regions of England with scattered heavy showers following into the southwest. Temperatures will be nothing to shout about with maximums of 6°C to 10°C, whilst brisk easterly winds pick up across Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England.
The rain becomes slow-moving over northern and eastern parts of England tonight with some rain also affecting parts of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland. Elsewhere it will become mostly dry and chilly with a sharp frost forming in the north again. Thursday sees cloudy and damp conditions retreating back south or southwest across England and Wales as brisk easterly winds develop but it will be drier and brighter in the north with just a few scattered showers.
