A weak frontal system will be trailing across southern regions today and although a ridge of high pressure affects northern Britain this morning, another, more active, frontal system will be moving into much of the north and west later on today before becoming slow-moving and bringing some very wet weather to parts of Wales, northwest England and western Scotland in particular during tonight and into tomorrow.
It’s a mostly cloudy start to Tuesday across many parts of England and Wales then with some more of that patchy rain and drizzle slowly pushing southwards. Meanwhile for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it is a bright start with some good spells of sunshine, although showers are affecting western regions, and these brighter conditions will be slowly extending further south as we go through today although many southern counties will remain mostly cloudy throughout the day. Meanwhile the sunshine in the north and west will give way to thickening cloud moving in quite quickly from the west ahead of outbreaks of rain moving in across many parts of northern and western Scotland and into parts of Northern Ireland, the rain turning heavy over west-facing hills and mountains in particular. Temperatures won’t be doing too badly however with maximums widely into the mid-teens, although the freshening winds in the northwest will make it feel cooler here.
That band of cloud and rain pushes further south and east tonight bringing a wet night to western parts of Scotland, Ireland and northwest England. Southern and south-eastern counties of England will stay mainly dry but cloudy whilst clearer conditions with a few showers will move into the far northwest later in the night. Wednesday sees that cloud and rain becoming very slow-moving with higher parts of Wales and northwest England potentially seeing a couple of inches of rain falling. Meanwhile, brighter, more showery conditions follow into the northwest, whilst south-eastern parts of England remain predominantly dry if mostly cloudy.
