After a quiet couple of days we have more in the way of action taking place with the weather today as a cold front pushes south-eastwards across Britain and Ireland with clearer and colder conditions following on behind. These brighter conditions then look like lasting into the weekend for many areas, but showers will break out at times, especially towards the north and northeast of the UK where low pressure will be close-by with its associated fronts and troughs, but further to the south high pressure won't be too far away.
Back to this morning and it is a mild but overcast start to the day across many regions with a band of locally heavy rain pushing south-eastwards. This rain is currently affecting southern and eastern parts of Scotland, parts of northwest England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland but it will move fairly steadily south-eastwards today, reaching southeast England by this evening by which stage the rain will have become lighter and more patchy. Clearer and sunnier skies, already coming into the northwest of Scotland, will then follow the rain southeast as we go through the day so many northern regions will become fine this afternoon although showers will affect northern and western Scotland. It will be mild ahead of the rain with temperatures into double figures, but single figure temperatures are expected in the north.
The last of the rain will eventually clear southeast England tonight and then for many places it will become cold and clear with a widespread ground frost and some air frost forming as temperatures drop close to freezing. However showers will pack into northern and western Scotland, turning heavy at times with snow over the hills. This takes us into a rather chilly day tomorrow but there will be plenty of sunshine around for many areas. Showers will continue across northern and western Scotland though, these showers being blown in on rather strong and blustery westerly winds.
