A rather chilly weekend is in store across many parts of the UK and Ireland with the risk of night frosts and some wintry showers in the north. However south-western regions are likely to remain milder and cloudier for much of the weekend and the colder air further north and east doesn't look like hanging around for too long with milder south-westerly winds set to return across all areas next week but this will also mean the return of some wet and windy weather at times as Atlantic frontal systems sweep in.
Back to this morning and for many regions cloud moving in overnight means that most places are frost free with only parts of Scotland starting off frosty. The cloud is bringing some scattered showers with it across central and southern regions of Ireland, Wales and England, and we also have some showers affecting the coasts of Scotland. As we go through today the cloud and scattered showers in the south will tend to only slowly sink south, but some more persistent rain will develop across southern Ireland, south Wales and southwest England later this afternoon. The best of the sunshine will therefore be across northern and eastern Britain but showers will continue to feed in across northeast Scotland, these wintry over high ground. Top temperatures will range from 5°C to 8°C for many, but the far southwest of Britain and Ireland will be milder with highs here of 12°C or 13°C.
The showers in the northeast continue tonight but for many parts of the UK it will become clear and chilly with a widespread ground and air frost forming, the coldest temperatures coming across rural parts of the north. However for Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of southern and south-western England temperatures will hold up thanks to a lot of cloud lingering with some rain and drizzle at times. That cloudy, damp but mild weather continues in the west and southwest tomorrow, moving north-eastwards during the day bringing the risk of snow to the Scottish mountains late on, but for central and eastern regions there will be plenty of dry, bright and rather chilly weather around.
