It has been a wet and very windy night across many parts of Britain and Ireland all courtesy of Storm Eleanor who is now pulling away to the east. In her wake comes plenty of blustery showers today and the unsettled theme continues for the next few days before colder air looks set to move down from the northeast as we go through the weekend.
It's a windy start to Wednesday with winds touching gale force across many parts of Ireland, England and Wales with severe gales in more exposed spots. These winds are bringing plenty of showers with them, many on the heavy and squally side with some very gusty winds attached with even inland regions potentially seeing winds gusting up to 60 MPH around the heavier showers. It is less windy across Scotland but we do have some rain and hill snow clearing the south and east of the country this morning. Otherwise little change is expected today with most places away from Scotland remaining windy with a mixture of some sunny intervals and further blustery showers, the showers merging into longer spells of rain at times too, but as we go through this afternoon the winds and showers will begin to ease from the west. Temperatures for many will be around normal for early January, but it will feel colder in those winds.
The wind and showers continue to ease tonight with a frost forming in the north under clear skies. However the next Atlantic system will already be on its way and will bring increasing cloud across many southern and western regions during the night ahead of outbreaks of rain moving in, some of the rain turning locally quite heavy at times. This rain continues to push north-eastwards tomorrow with drier conditions following on from the southwest although further showers cannot be ruled out.
