Low pressure remains well and truly in charge of the weather across Britain and Ireland for the next few days and we are keeping a beady eye on a secondary low pressure system that is set to zip across the country later today and tonight bringing some very wet and windy weather with it, along with the risk of snow for some central and northern regions.
This morning starts off cold, bright and breezy in many areas with wintry showers continuing to feed into many northern and western regions, these showers heavy at times with hail and thunder chucked in for good measure too. A few of these showers are extending further east at times, but the heaviest and most frequent of the showers will always be towards the north and west with further accumulations of snow in places. No great changes are expected today with some central and eastern regions getting away with another mostly dry and bright day with plenty of sunshine around. The showers out to the north and west will also tend to ease as we go through this afternoon but only as cloud thickens from the west with outbreaks of rain moving in across much of Ireland by dark. It will be another rather cold day, especially in those brisk winds, with top temperatures ranging from 2°C to 8°C, the highest values coming towards the far southwest.
The far north will be cold and frosty with scattered snow showers tonight but elsewhere and that rain spreads across many parts of Northern Ireland, England and Wales tonight, turning heavy and persistent before clearing from the west during the second half of the night. Snow is likely across the northern boundary of that rain, across parts of northern England and perhaps into southern Scotland, with gales or severe gales developing across more southern regions for a time although even at this late stage there is still some uncertainty over the exact track and intensity of this system so keep tabs on the forecast today. Regardless, the wind, rain and snow will soon clear away to the east tomorrow to leave most places with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers once more mostly towards the north and west.
