It was a very mild day yesterday with temperatures widely making double figures and a maximum of 15°C, but it is all change again today as a cold front sinks south-eastwards bringing a band of rain with it before colder and more showery conditions follow on behind with a widespread ground frost developing tonight.
The week starts off on a mild and cloudy note across many parts of England and Wales ahead of that cold front with its associated band of locally heavy rain that is currently affecting many parts of Ireland, Northern Ireland, northern England and north Wales. Meanwhile to the north clearer and more showery conditions are now feeding into many parts of Scotland and as we go through the day these clearer conditions will continue to sink south as that band of rain moves across England and Wales, the rain becoming light and patchy by the time it reaches the far southeast later this afternoon. Once that rain has cleared through many places will become bright with sunny spells although showers will feed into the north and west of Scotland, turning wintry over higher ground. It is a mild start to the week with temperatures reaching highs of 11°C or 12°C in the south, but it will tend to turn colder from the northwest as the rain moves through.
Showers will continue to affect the far north and west tonight but for many places a combination of clearing skies and lighter winds mean that it will be a cold night with a fairly widespread ground frost forming along with the risk of some icy surfaces. This will mean a fine start to Tuesday and for many places it will be a dry day with long sunny spells, but that sunshine will turn hazy as wet and windy weather will move into the north and west of Britain and Ireland during the day.
