A ridge of high pressure will be bringing plenty of dry and bright weather across many parts of the UK and Ireland today but frontal systems coming into the southwest and the northwest will bring rain with them, particularly across north-western Scotland where it will be a wet and windy day, and these fronts will then cross most parts of the country tonight and into tomorrow.
It's a cold and bright start to Tuesday across most regions but the clear skies overnight have allowed for a fairly widespread frost and some icy surfaces to form so watch out for these first thing. There will be plenty of bright and sunny spells around this morning though and for most places a mostly fine day is expected although there will be variable amounts of cloud drifting around. The main exceptions to the dry and bright them will come across the far southwest of England of Wales along with southern parts of Ireland where some rain or drizzle will develop. Heavier and more persistent rain will affect the west and northwest of Scotland though, lasting for much of the day and accompanied by strong to gale force west/south-westerly winds. Maximum temperatures today will range from 3°C to 8°C for many, but double figures are likely across the far southwest.
Cloud and rain will gather across much of the north and west tonight before making its way further southeast as we go through the night, the rain heavy at times and accompanied by blustery winds. Clearer, colder and more showery conditions will follow into the north and west later in the night with the showers turning increasingly wintry over higher ground. The cloud and rain will then clear England and Wales tomorrow to leave most places with a colder day and a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers turning increasingly wintry, even to lower levels.
