A widespread air frost to greet you this morning as we start the new working week, but there are a couple of things which we are watching today as the colder air begins to feed in from the near continent.
The first is across parts of Eastern and Southeastern England this morning and into this afternoon. When you get colder air come in from the East or Northeast then it's all down to any more organised areas of moisture in the form of short wave troughs which are responsible for bringing in areas of sleet and snow. Today we will see some showers pushing in from the Northeast bringing some snow across parts of the South Downs and High Weald of Kent. It's possible we could see a cm or two accumulating above higher ground, but the real risk is of showers falling as rain or wet snow and freezing overnight on untreated surfaces.
A clear and colder start the further West you are, but to the Northwest we will start to see thickening cloud as an active frontal system heads in. This is a rather interesting feature as it brings moisture in which then in turn runs into colder air which will be parked across much of the British Isles and parts of Central and Eastern Ireland.
Snow from this feature is expected for much of Scotland and higher ground of Northern Ireland/Ireland later this evening and overnight as it continues to march Southeast. The front will slowly break up as it continues to head towards Eastern parts of England, but a dusting of snow for much of Scotland, Northwest England and Northern Ireland can be expected by this time tomorrow.
Temperatures very disappointing for this time of the year with many areas struggling to get above freezing by this afternoon. Add on the wind and it will feel a bit like Narnia for many areas.
