Over the past couple of days we have had a rather active frontal system come across from the West which initially brought some rather heavy rain across parts of Ireland and Southwest England. Towards the end of this week and the band of cloud and rain push out into the North Sea but then the front reverses and heads back in from the East on Friday and throughout the weekend as much colder air arrives in from the East.
So, if you have some rain across your region on Friday and think "Hang on! I've seen this rain somewhere before!" Then in fact you did as it was the same frontal system which you saw a day or two ago.
Still some uncertainty regarding the distribution of snowfall across parts of England and Wales over the weekend which is something one would expect in more "convective" weather scenarios as it just takes a degree or two difference between the forecast wind direction and the actual wind direction to change the risk, intensity and distribution of snow showers. That said, we aren't expecting anything like the snowfall which we saw a couple of weeks ago across the UK. There is also no indication that freezing rain will feature in this cold snap either due to a different form of breakdown in the cold snap next week.
We are currently watching the period of Sunday morning across parts of Southern and Southeast England where some more organised snowfall could develop for a time. We have more on this in a discussion coming later this afternoon on the site.
That said, ice and snow will be features of the weather for some over the next few days as well as a rather raw Easterly wind. But, we are now heading in mid March and there is less of a bite on this system than the preceding one thanks to the ever increasing power of the sun at our latitudes.
