Easter Monday was a miserable day for many parts of the country thanks to low pressure moving in from the southwest bringing its associated frontal systems northwards. This low will be moving across the country during the next couple of days so we can expect further showers or longer spells of rain in many areas, but on the positive side this low is currently drawing in milder southerly winds in from the south although the far north will remain cold.
For much of Scotland and Northern Ireland it is a dull start to Tuesday with outbreaks of rain and snow continuing to push northwards. Although the precipitation will tend to ease for a time today, further heavier bursts of rain and hill snow are expected to develop during this afternoon. It will be another cold day in these regions with temperatures struggling to climb above 1°C or 2°C, but slightly milder air will move into southern parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland later on. Meanwhile for many parts of England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland it will be a showery day with some sunny intervals in-between. The showers will be heavy at times, but there will be more in the way of drier weather developing this afternoon and in the sunny intervals it will feel quite warm with top temperatures of 12°C to 15°C.
Further outbreaks of rain and snow will continue across many parts of Scotland and down into parts of Northern Ireland tonight. Meanwhile, after some dry spells this evening, showery outbreaks of rain will push northwards across Ireland, England and Wales as we go through the night, some of these on the heavy side. Temperatures will remain close to or below freezing across central and northern parts of Scotland, but elsewhere it will be a fairly mild night with no frost worries. Looking ahead to tomorrow and it will be another cold day with rain and snow affecting central and northern Scotland but elsewhere showers will tend to dominate with some bright or sunny spells in-between.
