The Bank Holiday weekend is now behind us but it really was an exceptional weekend of weather for many parts of Britain and Ireland with many regions experiencing plenty of sunshine and temperatures soaring into the mid-twenties making it one of the warmest May Bank Holiday weekends on record. As we return to work so the weather takes a turn for the worse in the next few days, although there will still be plenty of dry and bright weather around towards the southeast.
It is another fine and warm start to the day across central and eastern regions of the country but out to the west thickening cloud is bringing outbreaks of rain in across the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland, some of this rain locally on the heavy side. This band of cloud and rain pushes further eastwards today but the rain will turn more showery as it does so with some southern regions of the UK seeing little more than mostly cloudy skies developing. However, as these showers meet the warm air across England there is a small chance of some scattered thunderstorms developing by this afternoon, most likely across parts of northern and eastern England. Meanwhile the southeast of England is likely to remain bright and very warm for much of the day with temperatures of 24°C to 27°C but cooler and fresher conditions will be moving in along with brighter skies across the north and west this afternoon.
The cloud along with any showers clears away to the east tonight and then for most places a dry night is expected with some clear spells with temperatures widely dropping back down into single figures although the far southeast will remain a touch warmer. Later in the night freshening winds and outbreaks of rain will arrive across the far west of Ireland and these will spread into northern and west parts of the UK tomorrow, but for central and eastern parts of England it will be mainly dry with some sunny spells but temperatures won't be as warm as they were over the weekend.
