For those of you in the south and east who have suffered with the heat in the last few days the good news is that we've seen the last of the very high temperatures for now. Cooler, fresher air is moving in off the Atlantic this weekend in association with a rather deep low pressure system - in fact it could be argued that the synoptic charts have a rather autumnal look to them for today and tomorrow.
Back to this morning and although there are some bright and sunny spells around, bands of showers are pushing north-eastwards as the last of the overnight thunderstorms and associated heavy rain slowly clear away from north-eastern parts of the UK. This sets the scene for the day with further scattered showers breaking out at times, turning heavy with some thunder in places, but there will be some drier and brighter intervals too, the best of these coming towards south-eastern parts of England where some places will get away with a mainly dry day. Although temperatures will still be on the warm side towards the southeast with highs here of 22°C to 25°C, it will be cooler than recent days and feeling fresher in the brisk winds. Meanwhile further to the north and west maximums won't be far from the normal for the end of July, but in the breeze and showers it will feel rather cool.
Showers will tend to die out this evening but a band of more persistent rain will affect southern and then western parts of Scotland. Later in the night cloud and rain will spread into much of Ireland, Wales and southwest England and this rain spreads its way further north and east tomorrow, the rain heavy at times and accompanied by strong winds which could touch gale force in the southwest. However, the far north of Scotland and western parts of Ireland will see drier and brighter spells with just the odd shower.
