The first part of this week will see high pressure dominating the weather across many parts of Britain and Ireland bringing plenty of bright and mild weather before the high retreats away to the northwest during the second half of the week allowing much colder northerly winds to develop, and these winds could bring snow to northern hills along with the risk of widespread frosts.
There will always be some exceptions, and for today the main exception to the generally dry and settled theme comes across northern Britain where strengthening winds will bring increasing amounts of cloud with outbreaks of rain and drizzle becoming more persistent across northern Scotland and the Northern Isles today as winds hit gale force at times with some gusty winds also developing to the east of high ground. Further to the south and for many parts of the UK it will be a bright if rather chilly start to the week with some early frost in places. This will soon lift to leave many places dry with some sunshine, the best of which will come towards southern and south-eastern counties of England. Temperatures will reach maximums of 12°C to 14°C, but it will feel cooler in the brisk winds in the north.
Rain and drizzle will continue across northern Scotland and the Northern Isles tonight with persistent rain also developing across northwest Scotland as the winds remain strong. The further south that you come the lighter the winds will be and with clear skies it will turn into another chilly night with some patchy frost across southern counties of England, but it will be milder in the north. Very little change is expected tomorrow with many areas away from the north staying dry with some bright spells. However, rain will continue in the north and northwest and it will be windy for most places with temperatures on the mild side.
