After yesterday's rain and gale force winds, it is another wet and windy morning across many parts of Britain and Ireland as the next low pressure system sweeps north-eastwards. This low is moving through pretty quickly however and will leave showery south-westerly winds for this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow before more rain arrives over the weekend as the unsettled spell continues.
It's a dry start to the day across the extreme west of Ireland and for northern Scotland but this is very much the exception to the rule with many places starting the day off on a wet and windy note as outbreaks of rain push north-eastwards, the rain heavy and persistent at times and accompanied by strong to gale force southerly winds which will gust up to around 70 MPH in exposed southern and western regions. It's all moving fairly quickly though and brighter, more showery conditions will soon follow on from the southwest to reach all but central and northern parts of Scotland by the end of the afternoon. It will remain breezy and further showers will be blown in from the southwest, some of these heavy and blustery with a risk of hail and thunder. Despite all the weather activity it will be another mild day with temperatures in the range of 11°C to 15°C, but it will feel cooler in the wind and rain.
The last of the rain will clear the north and northeast of Scotland this evening and then for much of the country it will be a breezy night with showers pushing in from the west. Some eastern areas will stay mainly dry but the showers in the west and northwest will often be heavy and persistent with gales or severe gales for the northwest. Friday is then set to be another blustery day with sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers heavy at times, but drier conditions will develop in the west for a time.
