Welcome to December everyone and the first month of meteorological winter! The weather is starting the new season off on a typically changeable note with Atlantic frontal systems pushing in this weekend bringing showers or longer spells of rain to just about all parts by the end of the weekend whilst temperatures will be on the mild side, especially towards the south.
For many parts of the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales it is a cloudy, overcast start to Saturday with outbreaks of rain pushing in from the west, the rain locally quite heavy and persistent. It is a drier and brighter start across much of Scotland although showers continue to affect the north and west. Northern regions will hold onto a lot of dry and bright weather today with much of southern and eastern Scotland seeing a fine day as the northwest holds onto the showers. Meanwhile, conditions will slowly improve elsewhere as that rain continues to clear away to the east although many places will remain rather cloudy with only limited brighter spells developing. It will be rather breezy in the south but winds will be lighter elsewhere whilst temperatures will range from a rather chilly 4°C to 7°C in the north to a milder 11°C to 14°C further south.
It turns frosty under clear skies across north-eastern Scotland tonight but elsewhere temperatures won't drop too far thanks to increasing cloud and wind coming in from the west ahead of the next frontal system which will bring rain to all but the northeast by dawn tomorrow. This rain clears all but northern and north-eastern Scotland during tomorrow with sunny spells and scattered showers following on behind. The showers will turn more persistent towards the southwest later in the day but it will be a mild and rather breezy day for all.
