Changes are now underway across Britain and Ireland as Atlantic low pressure systems start to head our way once more bringing milder air in from the west during the next few days but with the milder conditions will come bands of rain or showers from time to time.
For this morning it is a very cold and icy start with temperatures well below freezing in many regions but to compensate there will be plenty of sunshine around. For central and western parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it is not such a cold start though and this is thanks to increasing cloud and breeze moving in from the west along with outbreaks of rain whilst snow is falling over higher parts of Scotland. This cloudy, damp weather will continue to push eastwards today with the sunshine becoming confined to the south and east of England by this afternoon. As that rain meets more of that cold air across the mainland UK so it will turn to snow, especially over high ground where some slight accumulations are possible. It will be another cold day with top temperatures of 1°C to 5°C in the north and east, but towards the southwest double figure maximums are likely as the milder air begins to edge in.
Frost tonight will tend to be confined to higher and inland parts of Scotland where outbreaks of persistent snow will develop during the second half of the night. Elsewhere and temperatures will tend to creep up a touch as freshening winds bring outbreaks of rain in from the west across many areas, the rain locally on the heavy side. This rain, and snow in the north, clears away to the east tomorrow to leave a drier and brighter spell with just the odd shower, but the far southeast of England may remain mostly cloudy and damp for much of the day.
