It's an increasingly mobile picture as far as the weather is concerned this weekend with a couple of Atlantic storm systems to contend with. The first brings rain into the west today with severe gales developing in the northwest tonight before the second, named Storm Freya, brings heavy rain and gales or severe gales further south during tomorrow into Monday.
The weekend starts off with one frontal system across central and eastern parts of the UK bringing a lot of cloud and outbreaks of rain or drizzle this morning but this will gradually clear away to the east to allow drier and somewhat brighter conditions to follow on from the west. Meanwhile, those drier and brighter conditions across western regions this morning will quickly give way to freshening winds and outbreaks of rain pushing in off the Atlantic, the rain arriving across much of Ireland and Northern Ireland this morning before spreading across much of Scotland, Wales, western and north-western England this afternoon. The rain will be heavy at times, especially over higher ground, and will be accompanied by strong south/south-westerly winds making for some tricky travelling conditions. Temperatures won't be doing too badly with maximums of 10°C to 14°C, but it will be slightly cooler in the north and northwest.
Winds strengthen tonight across northwest Scotland with gales or severe gales developing, gusting up to 65-70 MPH in the far northwest. Squally showers, turning wintry over high ground will accompany these winds, but for many other regions it will turn drier overnight as the rain clears east. However, rain is likely to linger across southern and south-eastern parts of England and this rain will push back northwards tomorrow as Storm Freya sweeps in, the rain turning heavy and persistent over the Republic of Ireland in particular before severe gales develop in the southwest later in the day. Meanwhile, for much of Scotland it will be an improving picture tomorrow as the winds and showers ease.
