Following yesterday's fun and games it is a quieter start to the new working week but this won't last long with another deep Atlantic low moving in later today to dominate the weather over the next couple of days with gales or severe gales and heavy rain expected to affect many regions.
Monday dawns cold and bright in many regions with some frost and ice having formed in places overnight. Scattered showers, heavy and wintry at times, are still feeding into areas exposed to the west/north-westerly winds this morning but these will tend to become lighter and less frequent today as a ridge of high pressure passes through. Many places will therefore see plenty of bright weather today with some sunny spells and the winds easing down a touch, but as we go through the afternoon cloud will thicken out towards the west and, as the winds back southerly and begin to freshen, increasingly heavy and persistent rain will move into western Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Temperatures will recover after that chilly start with maximums of between 6°C and 10°C for many, but it will remain colder over inland parts of Scotland.
Increasingly wet and windy weather sweeps eastwards tonight with gales in places although southeast England may escape the heavier rain until the morning. It will be a milder night for many but it will turn chilly in the north and west later as the rain clears to more showery conditions. A wet spell follows across much of England and Wales tomorrow with the rain slowly clearing south-eastwards. Clearer conditions and scattered showers will then follow but the main focus will be on strengthening gales or severe gales in the northwest during the afternoon when gusts could reach 75 MPH in exposed spots.
