Storm Hannah battered parts of southern and western Ireland last night with severe gales gusting in excess of 75 MPH in places bringing some damage and disruption with thousands of homes losing power. Hannah is now tracking eastwards across northern England but she is weakening so although it will be a blustery day in the south, the winds will be slowly easing.
It's a rather wet and windy start to the weekend across many parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland with the strongest winds to be found across southern and western coastal regions of England and Wales where westerly gales will gust up to around 60 MPH at times. These winds will remain pretty blustery for much of today but they will gradually ease from the west. At the same time the showery rain will continue, heaviest and most persistent across North Wales, northwest England and up into parts of southwest Scotland with these areas ending up pretty wet and miserable. Elsewhere and there will be some bright or sunny spells developing as we go through the day, the best of these tending to occur across the north and west later. It will be a rather chilly day with top temperatures reaching highs of 9°C to 12°C, but in the wetter spots across Wales and northwest England, values will be lower than this.
Cloud and showery rain gradually becomes confined to eastern and south-eastern parts of England tonight with drier and somewhat clearer conditions developing in many areas although further outbreaks of rain and drizzle will move into Ireland during the night. This band of rain will slowly edge a little further east tomorrow but for many places it will be a drier, brighter and less windy day although parts of East Anglia and southeast England will remain rather cool and cloudy with scattered showers.
