A shallow trough of low pressure will be developing and pushing across the country today bringing some scattered showers with it before a cold front sweeps southwards tonight and tomorrow introducing colder Arctic air from the north. Of course it is now May, so it won't be severely cold, but it will be cold enough for widespread night frosts to form and for some snow over northern hills and mountains.
It is actually a rather chilly start this morning, especially in rural regions where skies cleared overnight but there will be plenty of sunshine around. There are some showers affecting coastal parts in the west and also some showery rain across parts of East Anglia and southeast England, and as we go on through the day cloud will bubble up in many places with a scattering of showers breaking out more widely, some of these heavy with hail and thunder. As always in these type of set-ups though, not everywhere will see the showers with a few places staying dry throughout. The exception to the showery theme comes across northern and eastern parts of Scotland where a band of cloud and more persistent rain can be found and this will sink a little further south today with brighter conditions following into the far north. Top temperatures today will be in the range of 12°C to 17°C, but in the far north it will be colder with temperatures down in single figures.
Showers will tend to ease tonight but that band of cloud and rain or drizzle across the north and east will be tracking its way southwards to extend from Northern Ireland down towards the London region by tomorrow morning. To the south and west it will become mainly dry whilst to the north clearer and colder conditions develop with a widespread frost forming although some showers will move into the northeast, these turning wintry over hills. Friday sees that cloud and patchy rain continuing to sink south and then many places become brighter but chillier with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers most frequent towards the north and east.
