A weak ridge of high pressure is trying to exert its influence across the UK today bringing drier and brighter conditions to many, however, the remnants of a frontal system associated with the area of low pressure that's dominated over the last few days will trigger further showers in the north. Meanwhile, a warm front approaching from the west will bring some rain and drizzle in across western regions.
Although there are a few scattered showers around this morning, mainly across southwest Scotland and northwest England, for many areas it is a bright and fresh start to the day with some sunny spells round. Many parts of England and Wales will see a fine and dry day with variable amounts of cloud and some good spells of late summer sunshine but a few showers will affect parts of northern and eastern England. Meanwhile, across Scotland a scattering of locally heavy showers will break out, but north-eastern regions will remain mostly dry. Out towards the west, across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, skies will be generally cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle pushing in, this damp weather reaching the Western Isles of Scotland, west Wales and parts of southwest England by this evening. Temperatures will end up close to normal with highs ranging from 16°C in the north to 22°C towards the southeast of England.
The cloudy, damp weather across western regions will edge slowly eastwards tonight although the rain and drizzle will tend to become lighter and more patchy. Some clearer spells are likely towards the north and east but temperatures generally won't be as cool as they were last night. Wednesday then sees a northwest/southeast split developing with south-eastern regions seeing plenty of bright and warm weather. For the northwest outbreaks of rain and freshening winds will push in off the Atlantic with a few showers breaking out ahead of the main rain band.
