A battle is taking place between high pressure out to the east and low pressure to the west today with that blocking high making the eastwards progression of the frontal system associated with that low very slow indeed. In fact, the first frontal system fizzles out today only for the next one to move in before facing the same issue.
It’s a cold start to the day in many central, northern and eastern regions but most of the frost and any mist or fog is confined to the far north and east this morning thanks to more of a south-easterly breeze that’s picking up. The further west that you are the cloudier that it is this morning and for much of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, western Scotland and western parts of England it is a milder start with that cloud continuing to bring outbreaks of rain and drizzle with it. Changes today will be very slow with that rain perhaps edging a little further eastwards before fizzling out only for more rain to move in across the west and southwest of Ireland during the day. Meanwhile, for many central and eastern regions it will stay dry with some bright spells, the best of any sunshine coming towards the far north and east, but despite this it will be another rather chilly day with the freshening south-easterly wind making it feel colder.
The rain in the west and southwest will edge a little further north and east tonight, reaching parts of Wales and southwest England by dawn tomorrow whilst some heavy and persistent rain is expected across southern Ireland for a time. Further to the north and east it will stay dry with some patchy frost where skies clear but the breeze will tend to reduce the frost and fog risk for many areas although it could bring a few showers onto eastern coasts. Tomorrow sees that rain in the southwest continuing to slowly push a little further north and east with southeast Ireland potentially seeing some very wet conditions, but much of the north and east will stay dry apart from a few showers running onto eastern coasts.
