Following yesterday's improvement in the weather for many regions, it's back to wet and windy conditions today thanks to an active storm system sweeping through bringing bands of squally rain and gale force winds before clearing from the west to showers tonight and tomorrow.
Although some central and eastern regions are starting dry this morning, with still some patchy frost in the extreme east, freshening southerly winds are already bringing increasingly cloudy skies in from the west with outbreaks of rain, and some mountain snow, affecting much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This rain is now moving into western parts of England and Wales and will continue to push eastwards today with a somewhat drier interval following ahead of a band of heavy and squally rain which will move across from the west during this afternoon. The strongest winds are expected ahead of this second rain band with gusts of up to 75 MPH possible around exposed western coasts, but even inland regions could see gusts of up to 60 MPH which may pose some issues for the evening rush hour. Despite the wet and windy weather, it will turn very mild with temperatures reaching maximums of 11°C to 14°C in many areas.
The rain and gusty winds will continue to push east this evening, clearing southeast England by the early hours of tomorrow. Clearer and colder conditions will follow on from the west, but heavy showers will affect many northern and western regions, these turning wintry in places as temperatures drop low enough for some patchy frost to form in sheltered spots. Wednesday will then be a colder day with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, these becoming persistent and wintry at times. Eastern regions will see the best of the drier and brighter spells, but some of those showers will make their way across thanks to the brisk winds.
