The final weekend before Christmas is almost upon us and with the festive getaway getting underway later today and over the weekend then all eyes are on the weather following the recent very wet conditions which have and continue to bring issues with flooding in places. The good news is that conditions will be turning drier for many areas over the next 24 hours or so but the bad news is that there will be some more rain to come at times over the weekend and early next week before pressure rises in time for Christmas.
Further outbreaks of rain have pushed northwards overnight and these will gradually clear away to the east and northeast today with many areas seeing drier and brighter conditions developing although some eastern regions may well remain dull and damp until much later on. At the same time, showery rain, locally heavy, across western Scotland will tend to become lighter during the course of the day although further showers are expected to affect western and south-western coastal districts. It will be another mild day for many places, but more especially towards the south where double figure maximums are again likely, but somewhat cooler temperatures will move into the north and west as the winds veer more westerly.
Outbreaks of rain will continue to affect the northeast tonight whilst showers feed into many western and south-western regions, these showers locally quite heavy with a risk of hail and thunder in places. Elsewhere and with clearer intervals developing it will turn chilly, perhaps with some patchy frost and fog in sheltered parts of the north. The weekend is then set to start off on a bright note for many with showers around windward coasts, but the next frontal system will bring more wet weather into the southwest during the course of Saturday.
