Today sees a brief respite from the barrage of Atlantic frontal systems that have been affecting many parts of the country in recent days but it will be short-lived with the next system out to the west moving closer, ready to move in across the country during tonight and tomorrow bringing further spells of rain and strong winds. There are signs of a change taking place by the weekend, however, as high pressure builds in bringing drier and more settled conditions to many regions.
For this morning it is a dull and wet start to the day across much of East Anglia and southeast England with outbreaks of rain pushing their way eastwards, this rain eventually clearing the far southeast by this afternoon. Otherwise, for most places it will be a dry and bright start and there will be plenty of bright winter sunshine around today. Whilst many central and eastern regions will remain dry, showers will affect parts of the west and northwest, heaviest and most frequent across western parts of Scotland where they will be falling as sleet or snow over high ground. It will be a cooler day in the south and the blustery west/south-westerly winds will make top temperatures ranging from 4°C in the north to 9°C further south feel colder, especially in the northwest.
Although a few showers will continue around windward coasts this evening and tonight, many places will see a dry night with clear spells allowing temperatures to drop back. Most places will remain frost free due to the breeze, but sheltered parts of the north could see some frost forming. Later in the night thickening cloud will bring some rain into western Ireland and this rain spreads slowly eastwards tomorrow, but some northern and eastern parts of the UK will remain mostly dry for much of the day.
