Low pressure pushing northwards close to the west of Britain and Ireland today brings further rain and brisk winds with it to many areas during the next 24 hours but as we head through the weekend the emphasis will be on rising pressure bringing a much drier and more settled spell of weather which will last into next week, especially across the south of the country.
This morning will be starting off dry and bright across many central and eastern regions with some sunny spells in places, but out to the west thickening cloud and freshening winds are already bringing outbreaks of rain into western parts of the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. This cloud and rain will continue to push northwards today with further rain moving in from the southwest to affect many parts of Scotland, England and Wales during this afternoon with only the far southeast and far northeast likely to remain mostly dry for much of the day. Clearer, more showery conditions will also move into the southwest later on as the winds veer more south-westerly and ease. It will be another mild day with top temperatures ranging from 6°C to 9°C in the north and 10°C to 12°C further south despite the wind which could touch gale force in exposed western regions.
Outbreaks of rain will continue to spread north-eastwards this evening and tonight, tending to turn more showery during the course of the night as more in the way of drier spells follow on from the west. With the wind and cloud it won't be a cold night for most, but under any clearer skies in the north and west so temperatures will drop low enough for a touch of ground frost in places. Friday sees a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers affecting many places, the showers heavy at times and wintry over northern hills, but some sheltered eastern regions should miss them and get away with a mostly dry day.
