Once again very unsettled weather is set to make the headlines this weekend as an exceptionally deep Atlantic storm brings heavy rain and gales to many regions. Winds could gust up to 60-70 MPH in exposed spots over the weekend whilst higher parts of northern England, Wales and southwest England could see over 100 mm of rainfall bringing the risk of landslips and localised flooding.
Back to this morning and for many southern and eastern regions of the UK it is a bright and chilly start to Friday with some frost around, especially towards the northeast. However, cloud is generally increasing quite quickly from the west as a band of rain moves into much of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland, the rain turning to snow for a time over the Scottish mountains. This band of rain continues to push eastwards today, reaching all but south-eastern parts of England by this evening by which time it will be turning lighter and more patchy. Clearer, more showery conditions will then follow into the northwest during this afternoon, but some of those showers could turn heavy at times. With that rain will come milder temperatures with maximums ranging from 5°C to 7°C in the north and 9°C to 12°C in the south, but the wind will make it feel colder.
Those patchy outbreaks of rain will become quite slow-moving over southern and south-eastern parts of England tonight but the cloud will help hold temperatures up. Further to the north it will turn chilly again with a touch of ground frost as skies clear, but temperatures will rise in the west later in the night as the next batch of rain and freshening winds arrives. This takes us into an increasingly mild but wet and windy first half of the weekend with spells of heavy rain and gales sweeping in from the west across most regions.
