Welcome to May! Yes, the fifth month of 2020 is here already but the weather is still stuck in the fourth month it seems with sunshine and showers the order of the day today. The culprit is low pressure which is now moving slowly away to the east but will remain close enough to keep the showers going, especially for northern and eastern regions..
This morning is starting off dry and bright for many areas, but showers are continuing to feed in from the west and northwest, these locally heavy. The distribution of the showers today will be slightly different thanks to a change in wind direction with more of a west/north-westerly wind blowing today although this wind won't be as strong for most places. So it will be a day of sunny spells and scattered showers, but the heavier and more frequent showers will tend to be across northern and eastern regions with hail and thunder again possible in places. For southern and south-western regions of the country there will be more in the way of sunny spells with fewer showers, and some spots will manage to escape the showers and see a mostly dry day. With lighter winds it won't feel quite as cool with temperatures ranging from 11°C or 12°C in the north to 16°C or 17°C in the south.
Showers will continue this evening although they will gradually become confined to northern and western coastal regions during the night with northern Scotland seeing plenty of showers throughout the night. Where skies clear and winds ease it will turn chilly with the risk of some patchy mist or fog forming. Tomorrow sees further showers for northern and eastern regions of the UK but for many it will be drier and brighter thanks to a ridge of high pressure building in with temperatures a touch warmer as a result.
