Another hot day is on the cards with temperatures across a large swathe of England and Wales set to rise into the low-30's again, but even for parts of the north and west it will be a much warmer day compared to recently. A change is on the way, however, as the heat triggers some thunderstorms later today and into tonight marking the start of a transition to cooler, fresher and more changeable conditions by the weekend.
It's been a warm and muggy night and temperatures will rise quickly again in the strong sunshine with maximums across inland regions of England and Wales reaching highs of 30°C to 33°C by this afternoon although coastal regions will be less hot thanks to onshore breezes developing. Cloudless skies will dominate for many although there will be some thin high cloud making the sunshine hazy at times. The exception will come across parts of Scotland this morning as an area of heavy and thundery downpours drift north but they will give way to a fine and very warm afternoon. By this stage there will be an increasing risk of some scattered thunderstorms breaking out across the north and west, especially over higher ground. Where they do develop they could bring some torrential downpours, large hail and frequent lightning but most places will miss these and stay dry.
The storm risk continues to increase tonight across the west and south with scattered storms expected across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, southern and south-western parts of England. They will be hit-and-miss affairs with not everywhere seeing them, but where they do occur then hail, frequent lighting and flash flooding cannot be ruled out. It will be another warm night with temperatures falling no lower than the mid-high teens for many and this takes us into another warm day tomorrow although the heat and humidity will tend to become confined to the east as scattered thunderstorms push north-eastwards introducing fresher conditions into the west.
