We're now entering heatwave territory across parts of the UK with temperatures in the London region set to exceed 32°C by day for at least the next five days, starting with today. Very warm air is drifting across from the near continent and looks set to hang around for several days to come, spreading further north at times too, although for the far north and west you will again be left wondering what the fuss is about with cooler, fresher Atlantic air never too far away.
Of course, not everyone likes the heat and this spell of weather could pose issues for the vulnerable so the advice is to try and keep as cool as possible, drink plenty of water and to stay out of the sunshine, especially during the middle part of the day. Looking at the details and for many parts of England and Wales, Friday will be fine and dry with plenty of sunshine developing once any early low cloud and mist has cleared although there will be some variable amounts of cloud drifting around. It will turn very warm with temperatures widely reaching maximums of 25°C to 30°C, but towards the southeast of England and East Anglia values of 34° to 37° are possible. Meanwhile, for Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it will be cooler and cloudier with temperatures in the high teens or low twenties at best as spells of rain run north-eastwards, these locally quite heavy, but some sunnier skies should return to the far west later.
The odd heavy downpour may break out this evening in places, but as we go through tonight any remaining rain in the north will tend to die out with most places seeing a mixture of clear spells and variable amounts of cloud, most of the cloud across northern and western regions. The weekend sees high pressure building to the north and northeast of the country with many places seeing plenty of fine and settled weather. It will remain hot or very hot towards the southeast but many areas will be very warm with the heat potentially setting off some thundery showers in places.
