The ridge of high pressure that has given many areas a drier and brighter couple of days is now being pushed away to the east by an Atlantic frontal system pushing in bringing freshening winds and some rain with it That front continues to make its way south-eastwards across much of the country during the next day or two to leave a showery second half of the week, especially in the northwest.
That frontal system is already making its way into western parts, bringing a cloudy and breezy Wednesday morning to much of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland with outbreaks of locally quite heavy rain spreading eastwards. Otherwise, it's a mostly dry start to the day for much of the mainland UK with one or two early mist or fog patches to clear in eastern regions, and whilst it will remain mostly dry and bright in the east today, that cloud and rain in the west will be making its way in from the west, reaching all but the far east and southeast by this evening. Somewhat drier conditions will then follow into the west only for further rain to move in later on. Temperatures today will be close to normal for early September with maximums of 17°C to 21°C, warmest towards brighter parts of southeast England.
Outbreaks of rain continue to push further east and south tonight, becoming light and patchy towards the southeast of England but really setting in across north Wales and northwest England where a very wet night is expected. Clearer, more showery conditions will follow into the northwest but no matter were you are it will be a muggy night with temperatures holding up in the low-mid teens for many. Tomorrow sees sunshine and blustery showers for the northwest but cloud and increasingly patchy outbreaks of rain across England and Wales will only slowly clear south-eastwards.
