Welcome to October! Many areas will see some sunny spells today but pressure continues to fall across the country and by tomorrow a deepening low sat close to the south of the UK will be bringing wet and windy conditions here with low pressure then set to dominate over the country for several days bringing showers, longer spells of rain and the risk of coastal gales at times.
For central and eastern regions of the country it is a rather cloudy start to the day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, chiefly over Scotland, continuing to push their way eastwards, whilst an area of rain could fringe easternmost parts of England for a time this morning. Further to the west it is a bright and chilly start to the day although scattered showers are already pushing in from the southwest, some of these heavy at times. Many areas will see some sunshine today as that cloud in the east continues to clear away, but for much of north-eastern Scotland it will remain dull and damp throughout the day. Meanwhile, the showers in the southwest will spread further north and east across much of Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Wales and southwest England leaving central regions with plenty of dry weather and just the odd shower. Maximum temperatures today will generally be in the range of 12°C to 15°C, perhaps a degree or so warmer towards the southeast.
It remains damp in the northeast tonight and showers will continue towards south-western regions, but it will be drier elsewhere and where skies clear it will turn chilly with perhaps some ground frost in the north, but it will remain milder in the south where the easterly wind will be freshening up. This wind will bring outbreaks of heavy rain into parts of southern and south-western England by the end of the night setting the scene for a wet and windy day here tomorrow. It will be drier and brighter further north with just the odd shower but the Northern Isles will remain dull and damp.
