A weak ridge of high pressure is bringing a bright but chilly start to meteorological winter but a frontal system will be approaching the northwest later today and into tonight bringing a band of cloud and rain with it. This system will sweep south-eastwards tonight and tomorrow bringing a change to colder conditions with low pressure then set to take charge for much of the rest of the week.
There are a few showers running down the east coast of England this morning but for most places it is a cold and bright start to the day with some frost, especially across central and northern regions. However, out to the west, for much of Ireland, Northern Ireland, western Scotland and southwest England it is not as chilly thanks to more in the way of cloud. The cloud will continue to thicken towards the northwest of Scotland bringing some patchy rain and drizzle at times, but for many places it will be a dry day with more in the way of sunshine around. There will continue to be variable amounts of cloud across western regions, and a few showers will continue to feed into easternmost parts of England, but on the whole a dry afternoon for most with top temperatures in the range of 6°C to 10°C, mildest out towards the west.
A chilly night follows under clear skies towards the south and east but cloud amounts will tend to increase from the northwest across many other areas with outbreaks of rain moving across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland allowing clearer and more showery conditions to follow on behind. That band of rain continues to sink south-eastwards tomorrow but won't reach southeast England until late on. Clearer conditions will then move in from the northwest but plenty of showers will affect the north and west, these often heavy and turning increasingly wintry in the north as temperatures drop.
