We're now into a colder and more unsettled period of weather as low pressure takes charge for the next few days as it meanders around close to or over the country. This low will be bringing showers or longer spells of rain to many regions and it will be cold enough for some snow at times, especially over higher ground.
It's a chilly start to Thursday with some frost in places and even some icy surfaces where showers have fallen overnight. There are plenty of showers, heavy at times and wintry in the north, feeding into many northern and western regions with longer spells of rain towards the south, but north-eastern regions will see some sunny spells. The showers will continue in the north today but will tend to become confined to coastal regions, meanwhile towards the south further periods of rain are likely at times, and there could be some sleet and snow over the higher parts of Wales. It will be a rather cold day, temperatures ranging from 2°C or 3°C over Scotland to 6°C or 7°C across England and Wales. although coastal regions in the south and west may be a touch milder.
Outbreaks of rain, with snow over higher ground such as the Pennines, will continue to push north across England and Wales tonight, reaching parts of southern and eastern Scotland by the end of the night by which time rain and some snow will still be affecting parts of Wales, southwest and southeast England. Elsewhere it will turn drier with showers mainly around coasts, and where skies clear it will turn chilly with some frost, especially across northwest Scotland where a sharp frost is expected. The working week then ends on an unsettled note with further showers or longer spells of rain and snow, the snow mainly over higher ground but not exclusively so.
