The area of low pressure that dominated across northern Britain yesterday is now filling but will quickly be replaced by an Atlantic frontal system pushing in from the west later today and into tomorrow. This system will weaken as it heads east, eventually being deflected away to the southeast by high pressure out to the east.
It's a rather overcast start to Wednesday for many northern and eastern regions of the UK with outbreaks of showery rain continuing to circulate around that area of low pressure centred across northern Scotland. Further towards the west it is a drier and clearer start although it is cold with some frost in places. The showers across the north and east will tend to become confined to north-eastern regions of Scotland by this afternoon allowing many places to enjoy a brighter spell of weather with some wintry sunshine. However, cloud is already thickening across the far west of Ireland and this thickening cloud will extend further eastwards today with outbreaks of rain following on, the rain affecting all of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western parts of the mainland UK by dusk. Temperatures will be a touch higher than recently, especially across eastern England, with maximums of 5°C to 8°C, but it will be milder with double figures across parts of the west and southwest.
That rain band becomes increasingly slow-moving tonight across western regions of the UK with some heavy and persistent rain across parts of southwest England and south Wales. To the north and east it will remain mostly dry and chilly with a few coastal showers, and somewhat clearer conditions will move into southwest Ireland. Tomorrow sees that rain across the west and southwest slowly fizzling out with areas to the east and west seeing somewhat brighter conditions.
