A cold start to the Christmas period as a cold northerly air stream has developed in the wake of the low pressure system that brought all of yesterday's rain. This wind will bring some wintry showers to the north and east but as high pressure ridges in tonight so there will be some frost and ice for Father Christmas to overcome.
Christmas Eve is dawning much colder across southern regions but mostly clear and for many places there will be plenty of bright winter sunshine around today with the brisk winds slowly easing. Those winds will bring showers to exposed coasts, especially for western parts of Ireland, Northern Ireland northern and eastern parts of Scotland, and down the east coast of England, but also to the southwest of Wales and down into Devon and Cornwall. Some of those showers will be heavy, and they will be wintry at times, especially over higher ground but not exclusively so. Top temperatures today will range from 2°C in the north to 6°C further south, and it will feel colder in the wind.
Those temperatures will fall quickly after sunset with a widespread, sharp frost forming tonight. The only exception will come around windward coasts in the west and east where a few showers will continue to feed in, especially across parts of East Anglia and southeast England, and this will help to keep temperatures above freezing. These showers will die out tomorrow and for many places Christmas morning will be fine and frosty but increasing cloud and wind will bring rain into the north ahead of a wet and very windy Boxing Day.
Finally, from all of the team at Metcheck, we would like to thank you all for your continued support throughout what has been an exceptionally difficult year for everyone and we wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Christmas.
