The main emphasis today will once again be on heavy and persistent rainfall across parts of the UK bringing an increasing risk of flooding as river levels rise. Storm Christoph is the culprit for all this unsettled weather and by tomorrow a large, deep storm system will be sitting over the North Sea helping to draw in colder north-westerlies for the end of the week.
Once again there is a north/south split in the weather this morning with the far north and northwest of Scotland starting off cold and frosty with some wintry showers around coasts. However, for much of the rest of Britain and Ireland it is mostly cloudy with spells of rain, often heavy and persistent, continuing to feed in from the southwest. Some of this rain is turning to snow over parts of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland as colder air begins to undercut. This snow risk will transfer across to parts of south-eastern Scotland during today as the rain and snow clears Northern Ireland with the brighter conditions in the north moving in here. Meanwhile, for much of England and Wales it will be another predominantly cloudy day with further rain, this heaviest and persistent over western coasts and hills. Once again there will be a large temperature divide with maximums in the north of 3°C to 6°C whilst the south sees highs of 10°C to 12°C despite the strong southerly winds.
Winds will tend to freshen up in many other regions tonight as low pressure moves out over the North Sea and deepens. Strong southerlies in the south and southeast will veer more west/north-westerly during the night as outbreaks of rain, with snow over parts of Scotland and northern England, becoming confined to eastern regions by the morning. Showers will pack into the north and west and this colder, more showery weather will extend to all areas tomorrow, some of the showers blustery and turning wintry, especially over higher ground in the north, whilst longer spells of snow may affect the northeast.
