A very different feel to the weather today across many parts of the UK and Ireland thanks to strengthening easterly winds bringing in some very cold air. Low pressure over the near continent will bring persistent snow to the southeast of England today whilst snow showers will feed into many northern and eastern regions.
Temperatures this morning are close to freezing in many regions and although many areas are starting dry, sleet and snow showers are feeding into northern and eastern coastal regions. These showers will continue throughout the day in these areas, spreading further inland at times, but for many places there will be plenty of dry weather around today with variable amounts of cloud and some sunny spells, the best of these in the west. The main exception will come towards East Anglia and southeast England where cloudy skies will bring outbreaks of snow, the snow turning heavy and prolonged at times, especially towards parts of Suffolk, Essex and Kent, bringing some locally large accumulations. The snow will be accompanied by strong and gusty east/northeast winds leading to blizzard like conditions and drifting of lying snow so a pretty unpleasant day in these areas. It will be much colder countrywide with top temperatures in the range of 0°C to 4°C, highest in the southwest, but with a significant wind chill factor.
Snow across the southeast will slowly become lighter and more showery tonight with showers also affecting other northern and eastern regions bringing some accumulations and icy surfaces. It will be drier further west with some clear spells but no matter where you are it will be bitterly cold night with a widespread frost. This sets the scene for the next few days with bitterly cold conditions dominating bringing some severe frost by night and daytime maximums struggling to break freezing. Snow showers will continue around windward coasts, spreading further inland at times and bringing some accumulations.
