The changeable start to July continues in many regions today thanks to low pressure sitting close to the northeast of the UK with west or north-westerly winds bringing further showers. Conditions do tend to turn somewhat drier and brighter over the next couple of days, but by the weekend showers look set to become more widespread once more.
There's a fair amount of cloud around this morning in many areas with the best of the early brightness to be found across parts of northern England, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland although even here the odd shower cannot be ruled out. Showers are more frequent towards the south and southwest of Britain and Ireland whilst outbreaks of rain and drizzle continue to affect eastern and north-eastern regions of Scotland. Here it will remain damp for much of the day but elsewhere skies will tend to brighten up but any sunshine will help to trigger further showers, especially across England and Wales where some slow-moving heavy downpours will develop bringing the risk of hail and thunder, especially towards central and eastern districts. Not everywhere will see the showers though with some parts of southeast England, north Wales, northwest England and western Scotland likely to remain mostly dry and bright for much of the time. Temperatures will be a touch warmer than yesterday with highs into the low twenties in the best of the sunny spells.
Showers will gradually tend to die out this evening and many regions will see a dry night with some mist and low cloud forming. The next couple of days are then looking drier and brighter for most places thanks to a weak ridge of high pressure building in, but the shower risk won't be eliminated entirely although any showers that do develop will be lighter and less frequent than of late.
