It's pretty unusual to have a named Atlantic storm in July but that's exactly what we have this morning as Storm Evert slowly moves eastwards today having brought some wet weather overnight along with severe gales to the southwest of the UK.
A windy start to Friday then across southern counties of England with blustery winds gusting to gale force in places and this area of strong winds will slowly transfer eastwards along Channel coasts today with conditions then improving from the west. Elsewhere and winds are generally lighter although a north-westerly breeze will develop later as Evert pulls away.
The other feature of Evert, although not as problematic, is the rain associated with this feature which is affecting many northern and eastern parts of England first thing this morning. Clearer conditions are following from the southwest for a time before further heavy showers develop so this leaves Scotland and Northern Ireland with a drier start. The rain will continue to head further north into northern England today before turning more showery so that by this afternoon many areas are seeing a mixture of sunny spells and showers, the heaviest showers across central and eastern parts of England where thunder and torrential downpours cannot be ruled out. Temperatures today will be nothing to shout about, top values ranging from 18°C to 21°C and feeling cooler in the showers and where it is windy.
Showers will continue into this evening and tonight but will slowly ease and become less frequent with some clearer spells developing for more inland regions. This means a bright start to the weekend for many but we are expecting further heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms to break out during the day tomorrow, especially towards more southern regions.
