The main feature of the weather during the next couple of days will be a slow-moving frontal system affecting northern and western regions of the country bringing some persistent and heavy rain which will bring hazardous travelling conditions and the risk of localised flooding, especially across parts of southwest Scotland and northwest England. No matter where you are though it will be very mild if rather windy at times.
It's a generally mild and cloudy start to Wednesday across much of Britain and Ireland with the best of any clearer spells across northern parts of Scotland. Although many regions are dry, a band of rain is extending from southwest Ireland up across into parts of Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northwest England. This rain band won't move far today with pulses of heavier and more persistent rain running north-eastwards with southwest Scotland and Cumbria likely to see the wettest conditions. To the north and northwest it will be brighter with the odd shower and temperatures into the low teens at best, whilst to the south and east there will be a lot more in the way of cloud around with just a few bright or sunny spells developing helping lift temperatures into the high teens.
Another very mild night follows with plenty of cloud and breeze for most regions. Rain, heavy and persistent for much of the time will continue across Cumbria with rainfall totals really increasing and some of that rain will move into parts of northwest Wales during the night. Somewhat clearer conditions with scattered showers will move into north-western regions and this is where the best of any sunshine will be again tomorrow with much of England and Wales staying mostly cloudy. Otherwise the main focus will be on that rain persisting across Cumbria with many parts of Wales and southwest England becoming increasingly wet.
