We've been talking about it all week and now Storm Eunice has arrived with severe gales already battering south-western coastal regions this morning whilst heavy snow is bringing problems of a different kind to higher parts of northern England and southern Scotland.
For many parts of Ireland, England and Wales the main feature today will be those winds with widespread gales and severe gales developing, especially towards the south and southwest, but later on across parts of the Cheshire Gap and along with eastern and south-eastern England as Eunice pulls away out over the North Sea. Approximate timings for the peak winds will be:
West Wales, southwest England and areas around the Bristol Channel: early-mid morning with gusts of 75-95MPH possible:
North Wales into parts of the west Midlands and towards northwest England: around the middle of the day with gusts of 75-85MPH:
Southern coastal counties of England bordering the English Channel - mid-late morning with gusts of 75-85MPH:
Eastern England, especially around the North Norfolk coast - early afternoon with gusts of 75-85MPH.
Winds will then slowly ease from the west but it will remain very blustery throughout the day, especially around any showers. Please do keep an eye on developments throughout the coming hours as there is a risk of some very squally weather developing across parts of the Midlands and into East Anglia for a time around the middle of the day with thunderstorms and some exceptionally high gusts. Regardless, some very stormy conditions around today with damage to power lines and travel disruption likely in places.
Meanwhile, for higher parts of northern Britain a fair amount of snow is likely today with higher regions of central and southern Scotland set to see over 20cm of snowfall, and this will blow around as the winds strengthen, especially later when north-westerly gales will bring the risk of blizzards for a time. Some snow is also likely to lower levels in these areas too, but shouldn't accumulate as much.
We will have updates throughout the day here on the site as the situation unfolds so please take care and stay safe.
