Low pressure to the north and northwest of the UK and Ireland during the next 24 hours will send a cold front south-eastwards across all areas allowing colder air to return from the west and northwest for the second half of the week, this colder air bringing plenty of wintry showers to the north and west in particular.
For this morning it is a rather chilly but bright start to the day across many parts of England and Wales with some sunny spells and here most places will remain fine and dry today with further sunshine and variable amounts of cloud drifting around. The cloud will be more prevalent towards western regions where some showers are possible, but the main focus of the showery rain today will be across Scotland, Northern Ireland and, later, the Republic of Ireland as that cold front edges slowly south-eastwards. Indeed, for some regions it will end up a wet and miserable day with persistent rain due to the slow-moving nature of that front, but brighter and colder conditions with increasingly wintry showers will move into the far northwest. Temperatures today will be into double figures for much of England and Wales, but turning colder in the north behind that front with values in the low single figures by this evening whilst the wind will again be a feature, becoming strong and gusty, especially across southeast Scotland and northeast England.
That cold front and its associated rain continues its slow southwards journey this evening and tonight, reaching all but the far southeast of England by dawn tomorrow. Colder, more showery conditions will follow on behind with snow showers falling to quite low levels and this sets the scene for tomorrow with strong winds and heavy snow showers potentially bringing some issues for the northwest, but showers will be lighter and less frequent towards the south and east once that front finally clears.
