Quite a lot going on with the weather as we head through the midweek period with a cold front moving eastwards and a warm front pushing north bringing an impressive plume, with some Saharan dust, all the way from Africa across parts of England. This all clears off to the east tomorrow though and then high pressure really does take control for much of the rest of the week and into the weekend.
That cold front is bringing a band of cloud and rain which this morning extends from eastern Scotland down to southern Scotland and then through the Irish Sea and into the southwest approaches. To the west of this front it is a bright but chilly start with some frost and a few coastal showers. To the east and for much of England and Wales it is a milder start with a fair amount of cloud around with conditions generally rather hazy too. Here it will remain mostly cloudy today with an increasing chance of rain or showers breaking out by this afternoon, some of which could turn locally heavy and perhaps even with a rumble or two of thunder. Meanwhile, the clearer conditions to the west will edge a little further eastwards into westernmost parts of Wales and England so for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it will be a mostly fine day with just the odd shower. Top temperatures today will range from 9°C or 10°C in the north and west to 13°C or 14°C across central and southern regions.
The rain may linger well into this evening and tonight across eastern counties of England but will eventually clear away to the east to leave much of the country increasingly fine and clear. It will turn chilly under those clear skies with a widespread frost forming, but the far west and northwest will see temperatures rising later in the night as cloud thickens. This cloud brings some rain and drizzle into much of the north and west tomorrow but further to the south and east it will be mostly fine and dry with the settled conditions extending to all regions by Friday and into the weekend.
